HOW TO CREATE A SCHOOL TIMETABLE

Practical assignment:

In this lesson we have done such an interesting practice. We have been in charge of creating a time table for a class. Before starting it, we have read all the pedagogical information that head of studies have to take into account and after that we have tried to apply it in our own schedule.

I wasn't aware before this class, how difficult was to create an school schedule. Moreover, we only did a schedule for one course and group, so I can't imagine how hard it would be to do it for all the school. In this practical assignment, we have learnt the rules that the head of studies have to take in account while he or she is doing the school time table. For example:

The lunch break has to be at least of 1h 30 minutes

- The school day is distributed in 25 hours since Monday to Friday

- The daily break has to be of 30 minutes in Primary school and of 45 minutes twice a day in Infant Education.

  • The hardest thing for me to do was to organize all the subjects following the rules that the LOMCE says. I've also respected the hours that each subject had to be taught so that they had enough knowledge of each subject depending on what the law says is best for the students.
These is quite a difficult task, that needs a lot of effort and time.

After doing a research, I have found a Google app that can be used to do the school timetable; Google sheets.

Now I would like you to watch this video that I have found to understand how to use this app to create the school day timetable and how it could help us in our near future as teachers.

The video explains how do we have to introduce the different subjects, the hours that they will be taught and the teacher and students that will do and attend each class. It is also explained how to distribute the different subjects during the week. I think it could be a great app to use if we end up being the head of studies in a school.

This video could help to void the problems that Johnson (1996) said about the difficulty while a time table is being created :"The basic challenge is to produce a timetable for a term or year so as to avoid any class or teacher being double booked while meeting all the necessary curriculum requirements and at the same time satisfying as many as possible of a range of additional institutional requirements.
